Nile River Expedition, Egypt
Egypt Oceania River Conference
3 April - 13 April 2026
Few historical destinations speak to the imagination as much as Egypt does. Surrounded by the improbably complex architecture of the ancient Egyptians, the ancient culture of the pharaohs is palpably present in the landscape. The Egypt Oceania River Conference takes you to the heart of this ancient land, on a journey along the legendary Nile river that has been the centre of life in Egypt since its history began over six millennia ago. This is where some of the earliest developments in writing, agriculture, urbanisation and centralised government can be traced back to, and an undoubtedly spectacular and informative backdrop to our medical, legal and dental conferences.
This conference is a once-in-a-lifetime journey that combines professional development, quality networking and an unforgettable setting. Over the course of 11 days, we will explore the remnants and heritage of Egyptian civilisation and discover the country's modern reinvention from the comfort of a luxurious cruise ship boasting just 42 cabins. You will have the chance to walk in the footsteps of pharaohs and queens as you float down the Nile with the guidance of an expert Egyptologist who will bring the country's rich past to life. This immersive experience promises to be equal parts engaging, informative and incredibly inspiring.
We begin our journey in the Egyptian capital: Cairo. This fascinating city is the largest urban agglomeration in Africa, and a true melting pot of history and contemporary culture. Cairo has a rich academic history, being home to one of the world’s oldest universities, Al-Azhar, which was founded around 970. Here we will explore a 12th Century citadel, the city’s famous Alabaster Mosque and the Egyptian Museum - home to some of the country’s priceless treasures, including Pharaoh Tutankhamun's gold burial mask. We will also visit the Ancient Memphis sites, including the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx. This site is also where many of Egypt’s doctors were buried, including Imhotep - who was later elevated to the status of a deity for his contributions to medicine and healing.
From Cairo we fly down to Luxor, where the river cruise on the Nile begins.
After arriving in Luxor, we will explore the Temple at Karnak which dates back to around 2000 BC. Part of a vast complex that was built over the lifetimes of 30 pharaohs, this is one of the largest and most impressive sites in the country. Having been buried under the sand for more than thousand years, today we can admire the impressive grand avenues of sphinxes and halls of gigantic columns once again. Karnak is also home to the one of the first temples dedicated to Maat, the goddess who embodied concepts of law, morality and justice.
Following a stop at Dendera, after a conference welcome dinner, the next day we discover the Temple of Hathor and Temple of Luxor, equally impressive archeological sites. The ship will then head in the direction of Kom Ombo and visit the Colossi of Memnon and the Valley of the Kings.
At Kom Ombo there is an opportunity to join a bird-watching boat ride, and discover the unique flora and fauna of the Nile river. The southernmost point of the cruise is Aswan, where you can visit the Aswan Dam (a marvel of modern engineering), and ride a traditional Nile River felucca for afternoon tea at the Old Cataract Hotel Aswan, famous for being depicted in Agatha Christie’s novel Death on the Nile.
Passing through Edfu, cruising through The Nile, we arrive at Esna, the important cultural center for the Ptolemaic Period. In Esna we will explore The Temple of Esna, which was the last Egyptian temple to be decorated with hieroglyphic texts.
The Uniworld S.S. Sphinx
Travel in style on board the Uniworld S.S. Sphinx. Tastefully decorated by local artisans, this cruise ship will allow you to immerse yourself into Egyptian culture from the comfort of a luxurious ship. With only 42 cabins, this exclusive venue is ideal for a conference as it encourages professional networking with fellow passengers. The S.S. Sphinx offers two restaurants, a sun deck with shaded cabanas and a swimming pool, massage room, fitness centre, spa and much more. Contact CPE Travel to obtain a quote for your cabin on the cruise component.
Conference Registration
Please note that it is a condition for registration of this conference that all delegates must book and pay for the expedition component through CPE Travel. The reason for this is that we need to command the common areas of the ship in order to conduct our conferences and we can only do so if every delegate and accompanying person is part of our group booking. Unfortunately any person booking directly with the cruise company or other travel agent will not be able to register or attend the conference.
Legal Accreditation & Agenda
This conferences will take place over the duration of a full week with 4 academic days, each with a minimum of 4 hours of academic content each day (making a minimum total of 16 hours for the entire conference). The academic agenda is released on the first day of the conference, in order to provide the diversity and local input that are an important aspect of our conferences. Often local presenters are unable to commit to a specific session time months in advance. We believe (and indeed our feedback reflects) that the local presenters and field trips add immeasurable value to the academic experience and as such we want to preserve our ability to include them. After each conference you will be provided with a Certificate of Attendance and the academic agenda for your records.
