St Petersburg, Russia
East West Conference
19 - 26 July 2019
Russia's second largest city, St. Petersburg is a city of contrast. In many ways it is the symbol of decadent opulence, with its regal palaces adorning the banks of the Neva, yet it was also the crucible for the Bolshevik Revolution in the early 20th century and is now regaining its influence as a world city.
Whatever view we take of history, there is no doubt that the politics of Russia influenced how the whole world developed for most of the 20th century and it continues to influence world affairs today.
This magical city is a buzzing treasure trove of culture, history and art. It's easy to spend days submerged in everything from The Hermitage, to Egyptian mummies within the Russian museum, to world-class opera and big-name festivals.
Walking around the iconic and historic city reveals resplendent mansions and palaces rich with history, on the cusp of canals interwoven through the city. Walk the streets in the footsteps of such greats as Tchaikovsky, Tolstoy, Pavlova, Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, Vladimir Nabokov, Dostoevsky, Stravinsky, Rudolf Nureyev and Marc Chagall. Similarly, trace the history of Lenin and Trotsky!
