Join us on this private guided tour as we explore the park's features - wander through the lush horticulture, take in the unique architecture and artwork and experience seasonal food vendors. This tour will also give our delegates a different perspective of the city, offering unique views of the Hudson River and New York City skyline.

Important Notes

Esta Visas

International travellers wishing to visit the USA under the Visa Waiver Program, which includes passport holders from Australia and New Zealand, will be required to obtain ESTA approval; applications cost USD14 and must be made at least 72 hours prior to scheduled departure. No ESTA Visa, no entry into the US. It’s an easy process and we highly recommend applying for or updating your ESTA as soon as possible via:

What to pack

We recommend packing winter coats, scarves and beanies. For those that really feel the cold remember to pack thermals. Temperatures are likely to be around 5 - 10 degrees celsius with a high chance of snow; those sidewalks can be slippery so don’t forget to pack some good quality boots with grip!

Voltage in the USA is 120v/60Hz with type A or B "NEMA" plugs. Adaptors and converters can be purchased from a variety of stores in Australia before you go overseas.

Travel Insurance

Currency, tipping and taxing

AUD 1 equates to approximately USD 0.76.

Tipping for services provided is an American system that can be a little complicated and easily forgotten by foreign visitors. It pays to carry a lot of $1 bills throughout your time in the United States. Some restaurants will allow you to include gratuity on your credit card bill but cash is always preferred. If you are unsure of exactly how much to tip, the information below may be a helpful guide as a minimum:

  • The customary tipping rate is 15%-20% for taxi drivers, bar tenders and waiters, unless the gratuity has already been charged on the restaurant bill
  • Bars: $1 per drink
  • Airport and hotel porters: $2 per bag, minimum $5 per cart
  • Hotel maids: $2 per day ($5 per day in 5-star hotels)
  • Concierge: $10-$20 depending on level of service
  • A doorman who hails or helps you into a cab: $1-$2

Whilst it is a requirement in many countries to include all taxes in the final price, the USA does not include taxes in their advertised price. State taxes in New York for most food, beverages and other goods is approximately 8.875%.

Academic Sessions

Academic sessions will be held on the following days:

  • Wednesday 13 December 2017
  • Thursday 14 December 2017
  • Friday 15 December 2017
  • Monday 16 December 2017

The final academic program will be provided at the welcome drinks events.

Texting while overseas

All delegates will receive regular updates and important notices via computer-generated text messages throughout the conference week. We ask that you do not respond to these messages, and instead, contact your on-location conference organisers by their local sim numbers (to be provided at the welcome drinks event).

Prepaid tourist sim cards can be purchased from AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon. Please advise the conference team of any new mobile numbers.

Getting Around

Make use of your hotel’s wifi or free wifi spots (including parks) around New York to pre-plan your journeys to academic and social events. Google maps is a great source of information, even providing available routes by subway. MetroCards work on both buses and subways, and transfers between the two are free. Visit for more public transport information.

Fifth Avenue divides Manhattan into the east and west sides.

When getting directions, always ask for the cross streets (i.e. 810 Seventh Avenue between 52nd & 53rd Streets). This will make the location easier to find.

In Manhattan, if you walk 20 blocks North or South, you have walked one mile.

Activity Cancellation

Conference activities are booked and pre-paid by CPE. For this reason, no refunds will be offered for any cancellations. We recommend taking out travel insurance. As a courtesy, please advise the CPE team of your intention to cancel any events as we will attempt to contact any "no-show" delegates.
