Re-emerging from the aftermath of WWII and the Cold War, Berlin has since firmly established itself as one of Europe’s brightest centres of culture and engineering. The conference venue is centered around the Brandenburg Gate where US President Kennedy made his “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech and US President Reagan howled “Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall”. The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 paved the way for German formal reunification the following year.
Berlin is a destination steeped in medical and legal history. The Charité in Berlin is one of Europe’s oldest and largest teaching hospitals (established in 1710), and was initially founded for victims of the plague.
